"Question words are also called wh questions because they include the letters 'W' and 'H'. With WH Questions we ask direct questions."

"Wh" questions are formed by inserting a 'wh' word into a sentence in the place of missing information. This is the most common way to ask (for) information. Two commonly used methods are :

(1) By using WH Questions or WH question words like: What, Who, When, Whom, Where, Why, Whose, Which, How etc. and
(2) By using auxiliary verbs like: Do, Be, Have, Can, May etc.

We use WH Question to seek information about Place, Time, Manner, Object, Choice, Reason, Distance, Duration, Number, Quantity, Frequency and Person.

(i) 'What' is used to ask for information about something. e.g. What is the time?
(ii) 'What for' asking for a reason, asking why. e.g. What did you do that for?
(iii) 'What' is also used for asking for repetition or confirmation. e.g. What? I can't hear you.You did what?

'Whom' is used to ask what or which person or people (object).

'where' is used to ask in or at what place or position.

(i)"Why" is used to ask for reason / cause, asking what...for. e.g. Why are you so late?
(ii) "Why don't" is used to make a suggestion. e.g. Why don't I help you?

(i) 'How' : is used to ask about manner / condition / process or quality. e,g, How is your health?
(ii) 'How far' : is used to ask for distance. e.g. How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?
(iii) 'How long' : is used to ask for length (time or space). e.g. How long will it take?
(iv) 'How many' : is used to ask for quantity (countable). e.g. How many cars are there?
(v) 'How much' : is used to ask for quantity (uncountable). e.g. How much money do you have?
(vi) 'How old' : is used to ask for age. e.g. How old are you?
(vii) 'How come' : is used to ask for reason, asking why. e.g. How come I can't see her?
