Exclamations and wishes in direct and indirect speech

"Sentences which express our feelings and emotions, are called exclamatory sentences. Mark of exclamation is used at the end of an exclamatory sentence."

To change exclamatory sentences into Indirect Speech using direct indirect rules, an interjection i.e., alas!, aha!, hurray!, oh!, aha! etc. in the reported speech, then they are omitted along with the sign of exclamation.

  • • Geeta exclaimed bitterly that she made it (a mistake) again. (Indirect)
  • • Teacher said, "What a fool you are!" (Direct)
  • • Teacher angrily remarked that I was a fool. (Indirect)
  • • Son said to father, "Father!, I got first class." (Direct)
  • • Son told his father happily / surprisingly that he got first class. (Indirect)
