What is Preposition?

Prepositions indicate relationships between other words in a sentence.

Preposition is a word or group of words, which shows relationships, direction, time, place, location, position between two objects / words or to introduce an object and is placed before Noun, Pronoun OR Noun Phrases. Proposition is a word with a Noun / Pronoun to tell – What, Where, When and How.

Some examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to."

Examples:

• The book is on the table.
Note : Here “on” shows the relationship between the book and table.
• The school is near the temple.
Note : Here “near” shows the relationship between the school and temple.

Prepositions with Verbs

Prepositional verbs – the phrasal combinations of verbs and prepositions – are important parts of speech.
The prepositions most commonly used with verbs are: to, for, of, in, at, on and from.

Examples:
  • • He admitted to the charge.
  • • He must apologize for his actions.
  • • Have you heard of Sachin Tendulkar?
  • • Riyan lives in Canada.
  • • We arrived at our destination.
  • • We should concentrate on our studies now.
  • • He retired from the school in the 2020s.
Prepositions with Adjectives

Prepositions can form phrases with adjectives to give further context to the action, emotion or thing the adjective is describing.
Adjectives can be followed by: to, about, In, for, with, at and by.

Examples:
  • • I am happily married to Sonali.
  • • Alex is crazy about this movie.
  • • Shivam is interested in politics.
  • • We are sorry for your loss.
  • • Priya will be delighted with her results.
  • • Is she still angry at the world?
  • • The entire class was astonished by the exam results.
