Types of Noun

Uses of Noun and Gender in English Language

Gender indicates the sex of a person, animal, bird, insect. ie. Masculine and / or Feminine.

Kinds of Genders: There are four kinds of genders:

Masculine Gender
Feminine Gender
Common Gender
Neuter Gender
Masculine Gender
A noun which denotes a male gender of person/animal/bird/insect etc. is called masculine gender.
Examples:
  • Boy, Man, King
  • Father, Husband
  • Uncle, Nephew
  • Dog, Author etc.
Feminine Gender
A noun which denotes a female gender of person/animal/bird/insect/etc is called feminine gender.
Examples:
  • Girl, Woman, Mother
  • Wife, Bitch, Queen
  • Authoress, Actress, Poetess
  • Nun, Niece, Aunt etc.
Common Gender
A noun which denotes both male and female genders of a person / animal / bird / insect etc. is called common gender.
Examples:
  • Parents, Baby, Driver
  • Singer, Child, Cook
  • Judge, Servant, Teacher
  • Relative, Enemy, Person
  • Pupil, Friend, Rider
  • Cousin, Spouse etc.
Neuter Gender
A noun, which denotes neither male nor female gender of a person / animal / bird / insect etc. is called neuter gender.
Examples:
  • Book, Pen, Pencil
  • Lamp, House, Glass
  • Radio, TV, Album
  • School, College, University
  • Photograph, Science, Camera
  • Poetry, Car etc.
Some specific Gender treated as Feminine or Masculine
Ship and Countries are treated as feminine gender.
Examples:
  • The Ship lost all her crew.
  • India is proud of her progress and development.
Objects noted for Beauty, Weakness and Delicacy are feminine gender nouns.
Examples:
  • Moon, Earth, Nature
  • Spring, Autum, Peace
  • Justice, Liberty, Hope
  • Mercy, Charity etc.
Objects noted for strength and violence are treated as Masculine gender nouns.
Examples:
  • Sun, Summer, Winter
  • Time, Death etc.
