USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS IN SENTENCE
Rules for the use of Capital Letters

(1) The first word in every sentence should begin with a capital letter.

Examples:
  • We go to school.
  • Do you like to read?
  • You are such a good person.
  • Use your smile to change the world.
(2) The first word in every complete line of a poem should begin with a capital letter.
Examples:
  • How do you like to go up in a swing, Up in the air so Blue.

(3) Use a capital letter for the letter “i” when it stands alone.

  • You and I went to a show.

(4) The first word and all important words in title should begin with a capital letter.
Examples:
  • Jack’s story is called, “The Little Lame Duck on the Pond.”

(5) The word north, south, east & west should begin with a capital letters, when used and if they refer to the place. When you’re using a direction to describe nothing but the direction, lower case letters are the ones to choose.
Examples:
  • Eskimos live in the North.
  • Sheron is from the Far East.
  • I live in West part of India.
  • The sun is weakest on the north side.
  • I travel south at weekends.
  • Go south then east.
(6) Capital letters should be used to begin the name of following :

Month of the year
  • January, February, June

(7) The first word in the salutations of a letter should begin with a capital letter.

(9) The first word of a direct quotation should begin with a capital letter.
